How to Set Goals & Achieve Them for Life

Setting goals this time of year is as prolific in Australia as it is when we stop to watch the Melbourne Cup horse race every November. Its a big agenda!

Did you know?
University of Scranton. Journal of Clinical Psychology 2014.
Top 5 New Years resolutions for 2014 were;
1.  Lose Weight
2.  Getting Organized
3.  Spend Less, Save More
4.  Enjoy Life to the Fullest

5.  Staying Fit and Healthy

Thinking of setting goals?
This video teaches you how to set goals, monitor and achieve them PLUS a FREE call-to-action Cheat Sheet link.

The link to below will give you access to the 4 Step cheat sheet that will help you identify, set and manage your goals for life
https://taurustrainer.leadpages.co/how-to-set-goals-achieve-them-for/

4 Step Cheat Sheet

1. Find your favorite quote

Earle Nightingale recommends this formula. On a card, write your goal and on the other side write these words from Matthew 7:7-8. “Ask, and it shall be given you; seek; and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”

2. Identify - Using Questionnaire Center https://www.authentichappiness.sas.upenn.edu/learn

3. Using this page, write down your goals for 30 days, 3 months, 6 months or a Year for each element. Set three levels in which you can aim for.
Goal
Positive Emotion
Engagement
Relationships
Meaning
Accomplishment
Big

Middle

Runty

Focus on one at a time but keep the rest in sight
If you want to improve your fitness and health, this type of goal is aligned with Engagement. A way of measuring your goal is through quantifiable measures such as number of repetitions, weight lifted, kilometers achieved or time doing activity that help identify level of attainment. Let’s say the outcome goal is to improve upper body strength and tone. To achieve this you will need to work on strengthening your upper body. An exercise to do this is the push up. First test yourself to see how many push ups you can do following a protocol or reliable test.
Set levels

Following this test, you could set three goals with numbers next to the goal week that you can aim at achieving. (See Right). For example, if your Big Bull (BB) goal is to do greater than 45 push ups and your Middle Bull (MB) goal is 25 and you’re Runty Bull (RB) goal less than 15, you should write these in and attempt this test at the end of the week.

4.      Focus on 1 element for 30 days using a reminder
Sample: Matthew 7:7-8

“Ask, and it shall be given you; seek; and you shall find; knock and it shall be opened unto you. For every one that asketh receiveth; and he that seeketh findeth; and to him that knocketh it shall be opened.”

Matthew 7:7-8

Goal:

Big

Middle

Runty

Sample: Blank

Goal:

H.I.I.T Fat Boxing: 8 Simple Moves With DIY Equipment Using Tabata

Cliche as it is, here's a Boxing workout on Boxing Day 2015.

This can take as little as 4 minutes of your day or you can repeat any of the two stages I've provided here using DIY equipment. If you're conscious of eating and drinking to much over Christmas, this'll sort you out.

H.I.I.T Fat Boxing

In this
video I will show you how to complete a fast workout that burns fat using
boxing movements with the Tabata Training Method.

Tabata
is the name of a Japanese researcher who discovered an interesting way to
increase both anaerobic and aerobic pathways at the same time. As far as
metabolic training and conditioning for sport goes, this is the king of all
methods.

Tabata
involves exercising single or various muscle groups for 8 sets of 20 seconds
work with 10 seconds rest between each set (4 minutes). Complete 8 rounds
before starting the next exercise or group of exercises and so on for the
entire workout.

It's
simple:

-               take one or many exercise and
perform it in the following manner:

-               For twenty seconds, do as many
repetitions as possible.

-               Rest for ten seconds

-               Continue seven more times!

In this
video, I demonstrate two stages to the workout. Stage 1 is four exercises done
twice. Stage 2 is four new exercises down twice. This can be the complete
workout or you can repeat any of the stages as many times as you like to get a
full workout.

The
exercise I use here to demonstrate the Tabata method is;

Stage 1 – Warm Up

1.
Skipping High Knees

2.
Straight Punches w. Resistance Band

3.
Skipping Heel Kicks

4. Band
Rips

Stage 2 – Boxing Workout

5.
Combination 1, 2 (Lead Jab, Rear Cross)

6.
Combination 5, 6 (Lead Rip, Rear Rip)

7.
Combination 1, 2 continuous

8.
Combination 5, 6 continuous

You can
choose other favourite exercises using a similar method. Purchase great Tabata
tracks from ITunes or get free ones from YouTube or whatever music gets you
inspired and motivated to go hard.

5 tips to make Your New Year’s Resolutions Successful

Every year, without fail, each of us will say…”Next year I am going to give up smoking…” OR “I’m going to get fit”. This decision is usually made around the 1st January. Here are some interesting stats from University of Scranton. Journal of Clinical Psychology 2014.

Top 10 New Years resolutions for 2014
1.            Lose Weight
2.            Getting Organized
3.            Spend Less, Save More
4.            Enjoy Life to the Fullest
5.            Staying Fit and Healthy

Now here are some interesting stats on how these resolutions go.
Length of Resolutions
Data
% of Americans who usually make New Year’s Resolutions
45%
% of people who are successful in achieving their resolution
8%
Resolution maintained through first week
75%
Past two weeks
71%
Past one month
64%

Society implants this date as a motivation for us to change and make a fresh start. If it’s this day that you have planned to start being proactive about your health then let’s start with these tips to help you succeed.

1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT FRIENDS
In 2007 two US social scientists, Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School, and James Fowler of the University of California, published the results of study titled ''The spread of obesity in a large social network over 32 years''. This research revealed that people who are friends with people who are obese an increased chance of becoming obese themselves. That's right: your friends might be making you fat and even the health of their friends' friends, and even their friends' friends' can be a constraint to your chances of being healthy. (Sydney Morning Herald (p.15, 12/01/2011)

2.  IDENTIFY AND SET PROCESS & OUTCOME GOALS
Have you heard of the SMART Goal process?  SMART goals are specific, measurable, achievable, and relevant and time bound or trackable.  Carefully think about them, write them down, do the work and then revisiting you’re smart goal is an important step for creating long-term success. Outcome goals focus strictly on success. However, when it comes to the goal setting process, I would suggest adding in stage based and controllable goals which are called Process goals with your outcome goal plan.

3. TRACK YOUR RESULTS
Take some measurements of your physique (e.g. your waist measurement), take some fitness tests and take a picture of yourself. I guarantee that if you do this you will work harder knowing that you are going to be retested again in 1 month. Track your results initially, then at mid-point and the end. You’ll work your butt off to do better.

4. PICK AN EVENT
I have always been more motivated to train if I pick an event such as a boxing match or a milestone event. Make sure you pick an activity/event that is something you ‘Like’ and not something you think you should do. When you have a goal day and an activity you enjoy, you will be more likely to achieve it. Check local fun runs, events your gym may run or sporting club events. Pick it, work at it, tell your friends and you’ll soon be out of bed at 5 bells everyday to get it.

5. FIND A NEW GYM OR AN APP
Start the year with a fresh program our course to follow for the entire year.
Taurus Trainer has courses available that are interactive, effective and successful. To get your started you may also want to invest in new shoes, shirt, sweatband or latest app training buddy to monitor your progress.
On a final note, write out your goal answers and pin them up on your bedroom wall, fridge, work desk or outlook calendar. These words are your contract to YOU. If you can visualize being proactive about your health, avoiding negative people, be a little selfish and love yourself more in 2016, you will have tried. Fear of failure can stop others, but if you are scared to fail, you will never learn.

How To Stretch At The Wheel - 3 Movements To Improve Posture

How To Stretch At The Wheel - 3 Moves To Improve Posture & Concentration

Poor Body Position
FACT - every hour of (seated) TV watching we do cuts about 22 minutes from our life span (1). Now ask yourself this question - How many hours of life do I lose each day?
Sitting, watching TV, working at a desk or driving light or Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicles are all classified as sitting activities. Sitting less would be better and give you more years, but how can you make a living if your job is to sit? The answer – just as it is with any job is to analyse the position you are working in and perform it in the most ideal position to mitigate any risk of injury.
How you sit correlates closely with other activities (Mitchell et al 2008) so the most important thing to do first and foremost is to sit correctly and there are checklists available at most workplaces to help you. If not  contact me.
3 Moves To Improve Posture & Concentration
It is not realistic to ask a truck driver or any Heavy Rigid (HR) vehicle driver to just pull over for five minutes every hour and do stretches.
I’ve created three simple stretches that will help with your posture and mental alertness while still staying in the chair.
You can repeat these three exercises between 5 to 10 times, several times a day if you wish.

What do you want to know?

What would you like to know about training, eating and achieving fitness goals for weight loss or general health?

Create your own user feedback survey

Most people already know the basic rules; eat healthy, exercise and don't stress. But do you know the difference between fad and fact.
Fact - Eating healthy will result in lower rate of early preventable diseases.
Fad - Starving yourself will not help you lose weight.

Fact - Short burst workouts will burn higher rate of energy than a long slow distance walk
Fad - Ab King Pro will not burn the same energy as a 20 minute High Intensity workout or cost you 3 payments of $99 excluding shipment :)

Your instincts probably already have the answer, but where possible it's always good to ask someone like me who has been in the game for a long time and knows his shit.
Testimonials

I genuinely care and want to help.
I have over 15 years' experience as a health professional, Exercise Physiologist, Strength & Conditioner and Trainer and know the anxieties people feel when they don't know something about their health which can be stopping them from being their best.

I want to know what are your key questions about anything to do with health?
This is important to you and I want to help the best I can.

Please go to my survey and place your questions or questions. Ask as many questions as you want and I'll look forward to the great response.

Taurus Trainer – Bodyweight Program Case Study

About Bodyweight In January 2015, Taurus Trainer ran a program titled ‘Bodyweight’ that aimed at body fat loss and improvement in muscle endurance. A total of 49 females (Range 14 – 57yrs. with Ave. age 38yrs) and 17 males (Range 35 – 55yrs. with Ave. age 40 yrs.) from regional towns of Narromine, Trangie and Warren in Central West of N.S.W took part during the eight week course.

Initial tests in the first few weeks were conducted unbeknownst to the participants that they would be re-tested in a tournament at the conclusion of the program. Initial tests helped in identifying ideal program intensity levels for each participant. From the results of the tests, each participant was put in groups as a Beginner, Intermediate, Advanced and Pro.

Motivation

Each participant was given a goal setting sheet and asked to come up with an achievable goal. This created a reason to stay on-track and prevent program attrition. Taurus emailed weekly motivation quotes, links to motivational videos and general positive feedback for the groups. Meals, training and testimonials were also posted on Facebook to create community support and positive internal camaraderie.

Nutrition

All participants where sent a meal recipe booklet and emailed a weekly meal plan prior to each week to prepare for meal preparation and organisation of their nutrition. Weeks one and three had specific meal plans aimed at reducing carbohydrate and increasing protein intake. Week four was not programmed which allowed the participant to have a week off and enable a choice in what they had for that week. The strategy was implemented to see the impact of not having a laid out plan vs. temptation of poor food choices. Week five to seven where planned meals aiming at increasing natural sugar intake (through fruit) and higher fibre intake for increased healthy carbohydrate levels to assist in energy stores from extra volume and increased training intensity.

Exercise

Each town had two to three face-to-face training sessions and a self-paced program to use in the absence of attending training and not seeing a trainer. The exercise programs included a breakdown of training major muscle groups on separate days and one High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) training session on the weekend. Resistance training included exercises that were predominantly body weight orientated with the assistance of park equipment such as; benches, overhead bars, steps, incline hills, poles and grass ovals for activities.

Results

The culminating event conducted eight weeks after the program commenced called “Taurus Olympics” resulted in 37 (12 = M and 25 = F) people being re-tested. The males group (Ave. age 40.3 yrs.) lost an overall average of 1.2kg (weight), 2.5cm around the waistline and 3.0cm around the hips. The upper body tests showed that the average score had improved; Chin-up +4 reps, Flexed Arm Hand +20 seconds and Push-up +16 reps. The lower body tests also showed an improvement of +13 repetitions from the squat test. The 7 Stage Abdominal Test increased from Level 1 to Level 4 (+3) and the average Sit up score went from 38 reps to 54 reps. The ‘Beep’ test also improved on an average of Level 1 Shuttle 7 for each person. The female group (Ave. age 38.4 yrs.) lost an overall average of 0.8 kg (weight), 3 cm around the waistline and 1.5 cm around the hips. The upper body tests showed that the average score had improved; Chin-up +0.6 reps, Flexed Arm Hand +18 seconds and Push-up +15 reps. The lower body tests also showed an improvement of +19 repetitions from the squat test. The 7 Stage Abdominal Test increased from Level 2 to Level 4 (+2) and the average Sit up score went from 29 reps to 38 reps. The ‘Beep’ test also improved on an average of Level 1 Shuttle 6 for each person.

Winners

Based on the initial and follow-up tests, Narromine (1st place) had the highest average improvements by each person, followed by Trangie (2nd) and Warren (3rd). Narromine was awarded ‘Fittest Town’ and the perpetual Taurus Olympics bull horn trophy. The individual winner was based on points tallied on greatest gains for each test compared to each other in the specific gender groups. Linda Masterton had the highest individual score (females) and Darren Ferrari scored the highest in the male group.

Conclusion

The success is represented by the improvement of individual and collective group scores that are quantitative proof of overall benefit from such a program. Other markers of internal health status was not taken, however as a bye product of increased cardiovascular fitness and increased muscular endurance it is suggested that most of the group experienced improvements in blood pressure, blood glucose, HDL Cholesterol: “The Good Cholesterol” and enhanced general well-being.

Feedback

A feedback questionnaire was emailed to each participant asking a range of questions to help improve the program for future use and receive testimonials from those who took part and the time to write down some of their own experiences from the program. Below are some of the testimonials about the program.

Sophie (35) I had a lot of fun whilst maintaining fitness. I look forward to participating in this program after I've had my baby. I hope this service continues for me to be able to achieve that!

Al (47) Steve is a no bullshit instructor he tells it how it is

Danae (34) Steve is a fantastic trainer that is enthusiastic about health and fitness. He really knows his stuff and makes training fun and interesting.

Sarah (35) Makes you accountable through testing at the beginning and end of program. Classes are achievable for all levels of fitness. Offers added value through take home exercise and meal planners.

Matt (39) “I feel the as fit as I ever have. I cannot wait for the next program to start”.

Mary (48) Overall it was a great 7 weeks, yes it was hard work, especially when you weren't that fit as others, but that also helped me push harder. I accomplished my aim and was extremely satisfied with my outcome. I can't wait for the next block to start.

Jo (31) I've always been sporty, however lacked the motivation or drive to keep going. Completing the Taurus trainer program, has motivated me into completing some form of exercise daily whether it be a workout from the program or a morning run. It is now a daily routine. Looking forward to and counting down, until the next Taurus trainer program begins.

Lisa (33) “I've enjoyed working with Steve & have recommended Taurus Trainer to anyone who will listen”!

Julie (56) “This 7 week course has made me feel better about myself physically and mentally. It has motivated me to take control of exercising regularly, pushing myself when I wouldn't have before and thinking about the type of food healthy and unhealthy I put in my body. I will be coming back. Thanks heap Steve”.

Dan (35) “I started the program after discovering heart disease runs in my family. After playing sport for the majority of my life I was concerned at how unfit and unhealthy I had become. I have learnt alot about health and fitness over the past few months and have continued to use these skills and knowledge with my own personal training”.

Mel (45) Great service. I feel the best I have in years!

Linda (51) I would recommend Taurus Trainer to everyone. Best service to improve health/fitness as well as a friendly group to do it with. Encouraging Trainer who wants to see you improve your fitness level.

Cindy (37) “This program has helped me mentally and physically. I can actually say I enjoy exercising now”

Joanna (22) “Motivation is unreal and very friendly and helpful”

Mal (47) I hope to continue with Steve for as long as he`s around. I have realised that i need to put my fitness higher up the ladder of priorities in my life for both my physical and emotional health. Thanks Steve.....

Mel (44) “Even though Steve's title of Head Bull, Taurus Trainer sounds very blokey, he relates well to women and does listen and provides follow-up to your exercise needs & concerns”.

Amanda “I have achieved so much in 6 weeks I've gone from hating exercise to loving it. Steve’s program was fantastic and I enjoyed just being able to get out and have someone there to support me as I’ve struggled a lot after the birth of my second child. I have doubled or tripled my results from the first week to when we had the Olympics and I'm so proud of whole far I have come.”

ARE YOUR STRONG ENOUGH?

In the previous issue for Inflight Magazine we discussed the importance of strength training and how to test yourself using various tests that measure major muscle groups. This issue we look at training for improvement in each of these tests. Each of the movements or actions involved in the tests will be the primary exercise for the workout programs I have put together. The primary exercise will be exercise A. The secondary exercise (B) will be an action or movement that will compliment and compound the effect on the primary (first) exercise which most likely make you fatigue but pay huge dividends.

1. Chin up Test Training

Perform one repetition for this set by holding in the upward position and controlling the downward phase (eccentric) for three seconds. Go onto exercise B.
For the second set, perform two reps and so on until you cannot complete any more than the highest number you reached without compromising form.
Complete 10 reps after each set of exercise B using a 2111 count.
2. Seven Stage Abdominal Strength Test Training
Perform 10 repetitions in a fast pace and without any rest go onto the next exercise
Perform 10 reps using a 2111 count then have a 60 second break before doing set 2. Do 3 sets
3. Flexed-Arm Hang Test Training
Hold yourself up for between 10 or 15 seconds (or greater) and then without rest go to exercise B.
Press in an upward position against a doorway or overhead fixed bar for 20 -30 seconds then rest 60 seconds rest before going back for the 2nd set. Do 3 sets.
Complete as many as you can in 60 seconds or as many as you can and without any rest go onto exercise B.
Do as many as you can in 60 seconds then have a further 60 seconds rest before doing the 2nd set. Do 3 sets.
5. Dynamic Pushups Test Training
Do one rep every 5 seconds using a 2111 count. You should aim for 12 reps in 60 seconds. Then without any rest go onto exercise B.
Do 10 reps using a X count which means as fast as possible. Have 60 seconds rest and then do the 2nd set. Do 3 sets.
